The Benton Art Museum brings Mediterranean flair to Pomona College

“At their best, college art museums serve multiple functions. First and foremost, they are teaching facilities where students learn art history and museum curating skills. But often they are also local and regional cultural resources. The new Benton Art Museum at Pomona College in Claremont, California, is such a place.

“We’re in eastern Los Angeles County, adjacent to Riverside and Orange Counties. Historically the inland areas of greater L.A. have not been well served by cultural venues,” said Victoria Sancho Lobis, director of the Benton. “We aim to change that. We’re free and open to the public. We’re not motivated by the need to generate revenue. The opening of the Benton, planned for fall 2020, was delayed because of COVID. Currently in a soft-opening phase, with visits being offered to the press and public by appointment only, the museum is gearing up for an official opening later this fall—details to follow soon.
