Pomona College’s newly completed Benton Museum of Art is the American Concrete Institute, Southern California Chapter, 2019 recipient of the Innovative Uses of Concrete in Construction Award. A teaching museum, the Benton presents the conditions of a museum much larger than itself as a means of revealing the realities of museum curation and exhibition to students. With a legacy for providing a home for cutting-edge art in SoCal and more than 14,000 objects in its growing permanent collection, the Benton will be a space for the region’s most compelling and innovative exhibitions.

About the Project

Cast-in-place concrete is the primary structural, thermal and exterior facade solution for the Benton Museum of Art. Pomona College has a long history of cast-in-place concrete and here at the Benton the concrete is rendered in its most essential states—board formed and smooth—and is contrasted against stained heavy timbers that interact with the concrete as portico, porch, arcade, threshold and embedded ornamentation.

The building was completed in the fall, and is currently being moved into by the Museum, with an opening set for fall 2020.
