Entrances and Museum Expansions

American Alliance of Museums

Lecture Description:

In Museum expansions and renovations, the careful disposition of the entrance/exit is most critical. Second only to the landscape and public spaces leading up to it, the entrance/exit has a significant impact on the visitor’s first impression and experience. The location, presence and materiality of the entrance has the capacity to transform the identity of the museum, its relationship to the city, and the curation of entry and exit. Less obviously, the re-location of a front door often opens up new possibilities for gallery arrangements and itineraries physically distant from the entrance itself. Through a series of case studies we will look at how seven museums re-defined their entrances and their institutions as they underwent master plans, renovations and additions.
