Summer House
Renovation & New Construction
The design consists of two projects: the first is the renovation of a 1920s cape Cod house, involving the reorganization of existing rooms, and the second part of the project is the construction of a new office studio and guest house. The general design strategy for the main house involves opening up the interior living spaces and connecting them to the interior. This is achieved by expanding the living room (with the addition of a new sunroom), and the dining room (by relocating the kitchen to the existing adjacent garage).

Reorientation of Space
The rooms which were previously oriented inward have been reoriented to the exterior, to the views, and to the landscape. The new sunroom is an informal living room that mediates between the house and the landscape. It is an oversized window to watch the passing events of a summer day and a cool place to sleep on a hot summer night. The sunroom connects to the brick terrace, which also connects to the new kitchen. The new office studio is sited in the landscape, camouflaged within a grove of existing pine trees. It is a folly, with an imagery that recalls tree houses and primitive rustic structures.
