2016 Best of Design Award
The Menokin Project in Warsaw, Virginia has been honored by Architect's Newspaper (AN) in the publication's annual Best of Design Awards in the Unbuilt - On the Boards category. In its fourth year, "[the] Best Of Design Awards is a unique project-based awards program that showcases great buildings and building elements."

Reinterpreting a House
The twenty-six categories evaluated entries based on "strength of the presentation, evidence of innovation, creative use of new technology, sustainability, and, most importantly, good design."
Project description: "Central to a comprehensive master plan for a 500-acre historic Virginian tobacco plantation, the Menokin Project seeks to offer a new way to present and celebrate the complex history of the region through its designs to preserve the 1769 house. Built by a signer of the Declaration of Independence and designated a National Historic Landmark, the ruins of the house are stabilized and preserved using glass to highlight the history’s wear and tear. By delicately marrying old with new, the project seeks to reinterpret the house, while allowing researchers, archaeologists, and visitors to gain a unique understanding of the irreplaceable portions of the site, its ancillary buildings, and the landscape."

The Menokin Foundation aspires to approach the conservation and interpretation of the 18th century historical Georgian mansion in a truly innovative and revolutionary way. Their philosophy is to stabilize and exhibit the historic fabric that remains, while giving the public a unique understanding of the irreplaceable portions of the artifact, and by representing them with a completely different material; glass.
